Let’s look at what was already in place in this latest case at Florida State University: FSU is a gun-free zone — but the shooter brought a gun anyway. The shooter was 20 years old — under current Florida law, you must be 21 to purchase a firearm. He didn’t legally purchase the gun — he used his mother’s, a sheriff’s deputy. Murder is illegal. Assault is illegal. Florida has red flag laws, supposedly designed to stop dangerous individuals before they act — yet he wasn’t flagged. So again… what would more laws have done here? This wasn’t a failure of legislation — it was a failure of reality. Because people with intent to harm will find a way, regardless of the rules. Every measure that’s often proposed was already in place here, and it still didn’t stop the violence. Meanwhile, hundreds of millions of firearms across the U.S. weren’t used to kill, injure, or threaten anyone today — just like every other day. Millions of gun owners exercised their rights responsibly, safely, and peacefully. The problem isn’t the tool. It’s the individual.
